Resource use of crucian carp along a lake productivity gradient is related to body size, predation risk, and resource competition

چکیده

Generalist fish species can feed on a wide resource spectrum and across trophic levels depending availability interactions. Crucian carp (Carassius carassius) represents good candidate to investigate variation in the ecology of generalist as it be found highly variable communities its use is well documented. In this study, we explored crucian at individual population using stable isotope gut content analysis. We tested if varied according lake productivity, predation risk, intra- interspecific competition, or size. that preference was among within lakes. predator-free lakes, small occurred high densities, showed increased interindividual specialisation, relied mainly pelagic zooplankton. presence predators, large low densities included greater proportions benthic macroinvertebrates their diet. This shift further favoured productive, shallow lakes where littoral prey were probably abundant. Resource partitioning an important factor determining niche use, had higher position absence other cyprinids. dynamic food preferences response environmental conditions. Overlooking complex diet may lead oversimplification freshwater community dynamics.

Adaptive differentiation of traits related to resource use in a desert annual along a resource gradient.

• Plant resource-use traits are generally hypothesized to be adaptively differentiated for populations distributed along resource gradients. Although nutrient limitations are expected to select for resource-conservative strategies, water limitations may select for either resource-conservative or -acquisitive strategies. We test whether population differentiation reflects local adaptation for tr...

Phenotypic convergence along a gradient of predation risk.

A long-standing question in ecology is whether phenotypic plasticity, rather than selection per se, is responsible for phenotypic variation among populations. Plasticity can increase or decrease variation, but most previous studies have been limited to single populations, single traits and a small number of environments assessed using univariate reaction norms. Here, examining two genetically d...

Costs of Inducible Defence along a Resource Gradient

In addition to having constitutive defence traits, many organisms also respond to predation by phenotypic plasticity. In order for plasticity to be adaptive, induced defences should incur a benefit to the organism in, for example, decreased risk of predation. However, the production of defence traits may include costs in fitness components such as growth, time to reproduction, or fecundity. To ...

Body size and resource competition in New World bats: a test of spatial scaling laws

Assembly rules based on body size characterize processes that determine community composition and structure. One prominent model proposes a spatial scaling law (SSL) that links body size with foraging behavior and predicts the minimum difference in body size that is necessary for species coexistence. Although this SSL is cited frequently, robust tests of its predictions are few, and its perform...
